Electricity consumers in Mulund, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Kalyan-Dombivli and other parts of Maharashtra will now have to pay higher bills as the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has increased the Fuel Adjustment Charge (FAC).

Under the revised charges, consumers will pay an additional 20 to 55 paise per unit, depending on the category and electricity usage.

The FAC is allowed under Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) rules when the cost of purchasing electricity increases. The additional cost is recovered from consumers through the FAC.

How much more will consumers pay?

  • 300 units: Around INR 105 extra

  • 500 units: Around INR 250 extra

For small industries, the additional charge will be around 25 to 35 paise per unit. Commercial consumers such as shops and malls will pay around 35 to 60 paise extra per unit, depending on usage.

MSEDCL officials said the company had to spend more than expected on electricity purchases, mainly because of higher power purchase costs. The additional expense is now being recovered from consumers through the FAC.

Officials said MSEDCL is charging an average FAC of around 30 paise per unit.

This means consumers with higher electricity usage will see a bigger increase in their monthly bills.
