Maharashtra government has instructed all urban local bodies across the state to allocate vacant land in every ward for the farmers to set up their weekly markets. Along with the vacant lands, the premises of the residential co-operative societies will also be utilised for the same.
Ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha and Maharashtra Assembly elections, the state government wants to provide a huge market to the farmers so that they can sell their crops directly to the consumers under the weekly market programme in urban areas.
The aim of this programme is to keep the middlemen away from the sales carried out by the farmers for their production. Therefore, the state government has directed the urban local bodies to provide free space on the main roads and footpaths in each ward for the weekly market.

The Government has urged the urban local bodies to take a nominal amount from the farmers for the maintenance and sanitation in the weekly markets.
