The controversy surrounding the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) elections has escalated, with doctors opposing the state government’s decision to replace elections with a nomination system.

Medical associations have approached the Supreme Court of India and written to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, demanding that the move be withdrawn.

Doctors argue that the decision undermines democratic representation and could impact the voting rights of thousands of registered medical professionals. Several organisations have termed the move “anti-democratic” and raised concerns over the autonomy of the council.

They have also called for the election process to be conducted as per existing legal provisions, suggesting oversight under a retired judge of the Bombay High Court to ensure transparency.

The state government’s decision has triggered widespread protests within the medical community, with demands for broader consultation before implementing any structural changes to the council.
