It is a common practice for vendors to sell packaged drinking water at higher prices than its Maximum Retail Price (MRP) at railway platforms and bus stands. The vendors charge ₹2 or ₹5 extra for providing cooled water. In order to curb this practice, Railways introduced 'Rail Neer' that provided quality drinking water at subsidised rates as compared to other brands.

Currently, 500ml and a 1-litre bottle of Rail Neer costs ₹10 and ₹15 respectively. The MSRTC bottles are all set to be introduced by Diwali in the month of October.
