The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) will soon use drones to monitor pollution in the city at main traffic signals. Air Quality monitors will be mounted on the drones to obtain real-time data of pollution. The project will be implemented on pilot-basis to determine the concentration of pollution in respective areas. Junctions at Andheri, Bandra, Sion, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, and Haji Ali will be continuously monitored over 15 days.

Chairman of MPCB Sudhir Srivastava stated that MPCB has obtained the desired permissions from Mumbai Police to use the drones. He further said that this concept is similar to NEERI Drone Application that was launched in Nagpur last month.
A research institute under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) had developed a unique application using drones and sensors to get accurate real-time air pollution data. The application is named as ‘Neeri-Kshan-AQ' which flies in urban and rural areas to study various air quality parameters. Moreover, the drone can collect data on the vertical axis which means that irrespective of its height, the data will be accurate.
