Tension prevailed in Mumbai’s Mazgaon area after eggs were allegedly thrown at the arrival procession of the popular ‘Mazgaoncha Morya’ Ganesh idol on Sunday. The incident occurred when the procession was nearing the mandap, triggering anger among devotees and residents gathered for the event.
The procession organised by the Mazgaon Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal had been proceeding amid celebrations after the idol was brought from a Ganesh idol workshop in Elphinstone. However, the atmosphere changed suddenly when eggs were allegedly thrown from a nearby building as the idol was only a few metres away from the mandap.
The incident led to strong protests from Ganesh devotees and members of the organising committee. As news of the incident spread, a large number of residents gathered on the road and demanded immediate action against the person responsible.
Residents Stage Protest
Hundreds of devotees reportedly gathered at the spot and demanded that the suspected person be arrested. Some residents performed an aarti at the location and raised slogans while protesting against the incident.
The gathering continued for several hours, with residents insisting that they would not leave until the accused was identified and arrested. Police officials intervened and appealed to the crowd to maintain peace and allow the situation to return to normal.
The police eventually registered a case following the complaint. Officials assured the protesters that action would be taken within 24 hours. Following the assurance, the crowd agreed to disperse, although tension remained in the area.
Police Investigation Underway
According to Akhil Public Festival Committee president Hitesh Jadhav, the incident was highly condemnable as the alleged egg-throwing took place while the Ganesh idol was being brought into the mandap. The organisers reportedly sought registration of a case under non-bailable provisions and demanded a thorough investigation.
Jadhav said that Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar had also intervened in the matter and that discussions had taken place with senior police officials. Police have registered a case under Sections 299 and 160, according to the report.
Police personnel have been deployed in the Mazgaon area as a precautionary measure. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and attempting to identify the person allegedly responsible.
