Maharashtra Cultural Affairs Minister and Mumbai Suburban Guardian Minister Ashish Shelar has directed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to inspect all routes used for bringing Ganesh idols into Mumbai within 24 hours and undertake immediate repairs and safety measures.
The directive comes after an accident during the arrival procession of the Bhuleshwar Raja Ganesh Mandal, in which two people died and several workers were injured. Shelar visited Chandanwadi Crematorium to pay his respects to the deceased and met their families as well as the injured.
Shelar said the exact cause of the accident and responsibility for it would be established through the ongoing police inquiry. He urged people and Ganesh mandals to follow safety instructions issued by the authorities.
The minister also stressed the need for mandals to take precautions while transporting idols, particularly regarding the design of trolleys, iron components and vibrations during movement.
Shelar said he had spoken to the BMC Commissioner and instructed civic officials to assess road conditions along Ganesh idol arrival routes and take immediate corrective action.
He warned that strict action would be taken if any administrative negligence was found. “If any administrative lapse is found, no one responsible will be spared,” he said.
