Eight people were injured after a large tree collapsed during an inspection in Mumbai's Santacruz area on Thursday afternoon amid heavy monsoon rains.
The incident occurred around 2:00 p.m. on Relief Road in Santacruz (West). A civic inspection team, accompanied by local corporator Hetal Gala, had visited the site to assess another tree that had already fallen from a nearby private redevelopment project. While the inspection was underway, a second tree suddenly collapsed, trapping several people beneath it.
Fire brigade personnel, civic workers, police, and local residents immediately launched a rescue operation. All eight injured persons were rushed to Nanavati Hospital, where they were reported to be in stable condition.
The accident comes just days after another fatal tree collapse in Chembur, where an 11-year-old schoolboy was killed after a tree fell on his school bus. The back-to-back incidents have raised serious concerns over the safety of aging trees and the effectiveness of pre-monsoon inspections and maintenance across Mumbai.
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the city recorded 91 tree and branch fall complaints, nine short-circuit incidents, and four cases of partial house or wall collapses during the day as heavy rains continued to lash Mumbai. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious during the ongoing monsoon season.
