The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proclaimed a scheme to curate a safe school zone in the city in order to make roads, as well as, footpaths outside schools safe for the children, stated reports. According to this plan, the BMC looks to curate walkable and child-friendly school zones in the island city. This scheme is set to make roads walkable, free of any barriers and safer, all in all making it colourful for all pedestrians, whilst focusing on children.

In this pilot project, on Wednesday, the civic authority initiated the “Safe School Zone” at Mirza Ghalib Road in Byculla. Considering that the road hosts two schools, in partnership with the Mumbai Traffic Police (MTP) and World Resources Institute (WRI) they started this scheme since schools across the state have recently opened their doors to the children.

The design of this initiative will comprise signs, road markings, specified sections for waiting and walking, pick-up and drop-off zones, children-friendly spaces and a colourful pedestrian crossing. This first project has utilized economical materials and will undertake feedback from the locals prior to making it a permanent feature.

Narratives claim that BMC officials have elucidated on how based on the response they receive for this scheme, similar such zones will be made across the city. The areas for which will be based on certain criteria that entail, susceptibility to road accidents amongst others. Many have gone on to draw comparisons between this and the junction enhancement schemes commenced by the civic authority alongside the MTP and WRI.
