The pollution issue in Govandi nullah has once again come under scrutiny, with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) M/East ward facing criticism over alleged negligence in addressing contamination and enforcement lapses.

Following complaints about discoloured and foul-smelling water in the Govandi–Mankhurd area, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) carried out an inspection of the nullah. The findings were reportedly forwarded to the M/East ward assistant commissioner, raising concerns over continued illegal dumping and untreated discharge into the drainage system.

The Govandi–Mankhurd belt has long been recognised as a major pollution hotspot in Mumbai due to nearby landfill sites, industrial activity, and dense informal settlements. Environmental studies have repeatedly highlighted high levels of toxic emissions and deteriorating air and water quality in the region.

Local residents and activists have alleged that despite repeated complaints, authorities have failed to implement lasting solutions. The nullah continues to receive waste discharge, worsening environmental and health conditions in the surrounding areas.

In the past as well, the M/East ward has faced criticism over poor waste management and pollution control enforcement. With the monsoon approaching, concerns are growing over flooding risks and further deterioration of conditions unless immediate corrective steps are taken.
