As Cyclone Tauktae intensified into an 'extremely severe cyclonic storm' early this morning, Mumbai Monorail has suspended all the operations for a day.

This decision has been taken for precautionary measure and for the safety of the commuters. “This was a prompt decision taken for the safety of the commuters. We regret any inconvenience caused," Mumbai Monorail said in a tweet.

The city has been witnessing heavy rains and gusty winds since the early hours of Monday, May 17.

According to BMC’s report, the island city received 8.37 mm rainfall between Sunday 11 pm and Monday 7 am, while the eastern and western suburbs received 6.53 mm and 3.92 mm downpour, respectively, during the same period.

Meanwhile, the civic body also suspended the movement of vehicles on the Bandra-Worli sea link in the view of high-speed winds. BMC in its tweet stated: “Dear Mumbaikars, Bandra-Worli sea link will be closed to commute till further update. Please take alternate routes if at all you plan to move out. The best plan however is to stay indoors today unless it’s absolutely unavoidable.”

Besides, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai and warned of heavy rains at isolated places – Thane and Palghar -- with strong winds on Monday, May 17.
