Amid a growing shortage of gas cylinders, residents in Mumbai are increasingly falling victim to online frauds linked to LPG bookings. Taking note of the surge, the Mumbai Police has launched a special awareness campaign, starting from Chembur, to prevent further scams.

Fraudsters are targeting citizens by sending fake messages and links related to gas cylinder bookings. Victims are often asked to share OTPs or make online payments through fraudulent links. In many cases, once the OTP is shared, money is quickly withdrawn from bank accounts. Some links even allow scammers to take control of mobile devices, leading to significant financial losses within minutes.

Police say such incidents have risen sharply in recent days, largely due to increased demand and panic caused by the gas shortage. To tackle this, Chembur police have been conducting awareness drives, especially in slum areas, using loudspeakers and direct communication to educate residents about these scams.

Officials believe that this outreach initiative will help curb fraud cases and urge citizens to remain cautious, avoid clicking on suspicious links, and never share sensitive banking details like OTPs.
