A newly approved Nerul–Shirur four-lane project is expected to significantly improve travel between Mumbai and Pune. Once completed, the route will offer a faster, safer alternative, reduce congestion, and benefit both passengers and industries. It is also likely to ease traffic pressure in Chakan, a key hub for IT and automobile sectors.

Following persistent efforts by Amol Kolhe, the project has received in-principle approval from the state cabinet’s infrastructure committee. This marks a major step toward improving connectivity between the two cities and reducing dependence on the existing expressway and old highway.

The need for an alternative route became evident in February, when a tanker accident near the Adoshi tunnel forced the Mumbai–Pune Expressway to shut down for 32 hours. With no reliable backup route, thousands of commuters and transporters faced long delays, highlighting the urgency for another dependable corridor.

The project is also expected to benefit industrial and commercial traffic. Key industrial areas such as Talegaon, Chakan, and Shikrapur are likely to see reduced congestion, enabling smoother movement of goods and improving overall efficiency for businesses.
