Eight Ward Committee Chairperson posts in the Thane Municipal Corporation have been decided unopposed following the filing of nomination papers on Friday. Elections for the posts were scheduled for August 4 after the completion of the municipal corporation’s general election process. It was reported that Shiv Sena had secured seven of the eight uncontested chairperson posts, while one position had been secured by the Bharatiya Janata Party. No rival nominations were filed against the candidates in these ward committees, resulting in their unopposed election.
The Ward Committee Chairperson posts were being filled after Shiv Sena secured the Mayor’s position in the Thane Municipal Corporation and the BJP obtained the Deputy Mayor’s post. The appointments were also being completed ahead of the forthcoming Standing Committee elections.
Minal Sankhe was elected unopposed as Chairperson of the Naupada-Kopri Ward Committee. Ekta Bhoir was selected for the Wagle Ward Committee, while Nirmala Kanse was elected from the Lokmanya-Savarkar Nagar Ward Committee. Vijaya Lase was elected Chairperson of the Kalwa Ward Committee. Deepak Jadhav secured the Diva Ward Committee post, Siddharth Owalekar was elected from the Majiwada-Manpada Ward Committee and Jayshree David was selected for the Vartak Nagar Ward Committee.
All seven candidates had filed their nominations as Shiv Sena representatives and were elected after no opposing candidates entered the election process.
In the Uthalsar Ward Committee, BJP candidate Narayan Pawar was also elected unopposed after remaining the sole nominee for the chairperson’s post. His selection was supported by the BJP’s numerical position in the ward committee. Party members were quoted as describing the uncontested result as a “birthday gift” for Pawar.Voting will, however, be required for the Mumbra Ward Committee Chairperson’s post. A direct contest has been scheduled between Deepali Bhagat of the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) and Nafisa Ansari of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen.
The Mumbra Ward Committee includes nine members belonging to the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction), five members from AIMIM and two members representing the NCP (Ajit Pawar faction). The NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) has the largest number of members in the committee. The final result will be determined through voting during the official election scheduled for August 4. With eight chairperson posts already settled without contests, the Mumbra Ward Committee remains the only committee where two candidates are competing. The election will complete the process of selecting chairpersons for the nine TMC ward committees.
