Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Varun Sardesai has alleged that a 5-acre public park located in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) has been effectively restricted from public access and is being used primarily by officials of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and their families.

In a post on X, Sardesai claimed that the park, developed as a “green lung” for Bandra East and surrounding areas using taxpayer money, is no longer accessible to the general public. He alleged that entry is now restricted and allowed only through the MMRDA’s “Jetvan” staff quarters.

He further alleged that the facility, which includes landscaped gardens and sports infrastructure such as tennis courts and cricket turf, is being used exclusively by officials. Sardesai also claimed that sports events for MMRDA staff have recently been organised within the premises.

Calling it a misuse of public resources, he said that a publicly funded park has effectively been turned into a private recreational space for a select group of bureaucrats and their families. He questioned the authority under which public access was restricted and demanded accountability from the MMRDA.

Sardesai has also written to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, demanding a high-level inquiry into the matter. He urged authorities to investigate the alleged misuse of taxpayer funds for maintaining a facility reportedly being used exclusively by a limited group of officials and their families.

He further demanded that those responsible for restricting access and misusing public funds be suspended pending inquiry.

Reiterating his stand, Sardesai said that public land belongs to citizens and cannot be converted into an exclusive enclave for government officials.
