Navi Mumbai Launches De-addiction and Rehabilitation Centre

As part of the city’s broader campaign against drug abuse, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated a new De-addiction and Rehabilitation Centre in Navi Mumbai, launched jointly by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) and Navi Mumbai Police Commissionerate.

The centre was inaugurated by Fadnavis from D Y Patil University of Excellence in Nerul during the launch of the Navi Mumbai Police’s special ‘Campus Connect’ campaign under the ‘Drug-Free Navi Mumbai Mission’. A large number of students and young people attended the programme.

Speaking on the occasion, Fadnavis said the ‘Campus Connect’ initiative was an important step not only towards breaking the supply chain of narcotics but also towards preventing demand for drugs through awareness and education. 

He said every educational campus in Navi Mumbai should become a centre for the fight against drug abuse, while students should become active participants in the campaign. He also stressed that young people trapped in addiction should not be treated merely as offenders, but should instead be provided with treatment, counselling and rehabilitation support.

11-Bed Facility in CBD Belapur

The new De-addiction and Rehabilitation Centre has been established at the Mother Teresa Building in Sector 8, CBD Belapur, with the cooperation of the Navi Mumbai Police Commissionerate.

The facility will initially have a capacity of 11 beds and will focus on helping individuals overcome substance dependence while supporting their return to normal social and professional life.The centre will be operated by Bandhki Foundation and will provide a range of rehabilitation services, including counselling, life-skills programmes, skill development, vocational training, recreational activities and other patient-support initiatives. 

Families of patients will also be involved in the rehabilitation process. Counselling and regular communication with family members will be undertaken to create a supportive environment for recovery and social reintegration.

Professional Treatment and Counselling

The centre will have trained and qualified professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists and counsellors, along with nurses, ward staff, security personnel and an experienced manager.

Patients will receive medical treatment under the supervision of doctors. Psychiatrists will work with patients to address issues such as anxiety, fear, depression and mental stress associated with addiction.The facility will also provide recreational and wellness activities such as carrom and chess, along with yoga, meditation and exercise aimed at promoting mental well-being, positive thinking and physical fitness.The authorities said staff members will receive periodic training and the centre will have a supervision mechanism to ensure that patients receive appropriate and professional care.

Focus on Youth and Prevention

Fadnavis said growing substance abuse and mental stress have increased the need for dedicated rehabilitation facilities, particularly for young people. Addiction to alcohol, drugs and other harmful substances can affect not only physical health but also mental well-being, education, careers and family life, he said.

The ‘Campus Connect’ campaign will therefore focus on awareness among students while the rehabilitation centre will provide treatment and support to those who have already fallen into addiction.

The initiative is aimed at creating a coordinated model in which the police, civic administration, educational institutions, families and social organisations work together to build a drug-free Navi Mumbai.
