The Navi Mumbai Metro network is set for a major expansion, with two new corridors proposed to improve connectivity to the Navi Mumbai International Airport and several rapidly developing areas of the city.
The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) has prepared detailed project reports for Metro Line 1A and Metro Line 2 and submitted them to the state government for approval. The proposed projects, estimated to cost around ₹5,557 crore, are expected to strengthen the metro network around Navi Mumbai International Airport.
The existing Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1 connects CBD Belapur with Pendhar through Kharghar and Taloja. The 11.1-km corridor, with 11 stations, began commercial operations in November 2023.
Under the proposed expansion, the metro network will be extended towards Taloja, Kalamboli and Khandeshwar. A link between the existing Belapur-Pendhar corridor and the new routes is also planned, creating a more integrated metro network.
One of the proposed corridors will eventually connect with the Mumbai–Navi Mumbai Airport Metro corridor, providing passengers with improved access to the international airport.
The expansion is expected to benefit residents of Kamothe, Kalamboli, Taloja and surrounding areas, while also providing an alternative to road transport for airport-bound passengers.
Officials expect the planned network to play an important role in supporting Navi Mumbai's growing population and increasing commercial activity. With the Navi Mumbai International Airport becoming a major transport hub, the proposed metro extensions are expected to improve last-mile connectivity and reduce dependence on private vehicles.
The proposed projects are now awaiting the necessary approvals before construction can begin.
