With Maharashtra government's decision to ban plastic, thermocol and impose fines for its use, Mumbai’s fisherwomen are the ones who will face a big blow. After selling the fish, the fisherwomen store the rest in a thermocol box so that it doesn’t get spoiled.

However, the imposition of fines on the use of plastic and thermocol creates a huge problem for the community. Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) group leader Rakhi Jadhav expressed her dissatisfaction over the same and asked: “Where should the fisherwomen keep the fish?”

She has requested the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Ajoy Mehta to provide plastic and fibre boxes to fisherwomen and spend from the funds available with the civic body to avoid inconvenience to the community.

The NCP group leader has supported the state government’s decision and its implementation. However, Jadhav has appealed to the administration that in this process the general public shall not face any problems. She further added that alternatives shall be provided for plastics in the markets.
