A biological control project launched to eliminate the invasive aquatic weed Salvinia molesta from Vadale Lake in Panvel is showing encouraging results, offering an environmentally friendly alternative to chemical treatment and helping restore the lake's ecological balance.
The initiative is being jointly implemented by the Panvel Municipal Corporation and ICAR-Directorate of Weed Research.
Spread across nearly 22 acres, Vadale Lake had witnessed extensive growth of Salvinia molesta, which had covered around 4.5 hectares of the water body. The dense floating weed reduced oxygen levels in the water, adversely affecting fish and other aquatic organisms while threatening the lake's natural ecosystem.
To tackle the problem, the municipal corporation launched an INR 11.80 lakh biological control project, scheduled to run from April 2026 to October 2027. As part of the initiative, more than one lakh Cyrtobagous salviniae weevils have been released into the lake.
These insects feed exclusively on Salvinia molesta, helping to naturally suppress and destroy the invasive weed without harming fish, water quality, or other aquatic life.
Municipal officials said the biological control method has already begun reducing the density of the weed while maintaining ecological balance. Compared to chemical spraying, the approach is considered safer, more sustainable and better suited for preserving biodiversity.
As part of the broader lake rejuvenation programme, drains and channels carrying sewage into the lake have been sealed. Officials said these measures have improved water circulation and contributed to better water quality.
Environmental experts believe that cleaner water and reduced weed cover will create a more suitable habitat for migratory birds and other wildlife, enhancing the lake's ecological value.
‘Vadale Lake Is Panvel’s Pride’
Mangesh Chitale, Commissioner of Panvel Municipal Corporation, said the project is proving to be a successful "green solution" aimed at preserving the lake's natural beauty and ecological health.
“Vadale Lake is the pride of Panvel. The environmentally sustainable measures adopted for its conservation are yielding positive results. Once the invasive weed is completely eradicated, the lake's beauty and ecological significance will increase further,” he said.
