To curb the increasing plastic pollution on Mumbai's beaches and improve the cleanliness of tourist destinations, the Mumbai Port Authority (MbPA) has taken an important decision. 10 recycling machines will be installed at the Gateway of India and other major tourist destinations under the authority.
According to MbPA officials, about 14 tonnes of waste has to be collected every year due to plastic bottles, soft drink cans and other waste thrown by tourists on beaches and tourist destinations.
Capacity to store 3,000 bottles in one machine
Tourists will be able to collect empty plastic bottles and soft drink cans in this recycling machine. The machine will separate and store this waste and then send it for recycling. Each machine will have the capacity to store 2,500 to 3,000 plastic bottles.
Where will the machine be installed?
MbPA Chairman Dr. According to M. Angamuthu, recycling machines will be installed at the following important locations:
In addition, there are plans to install such machines at other crowded places under the control of MbPA.
Awareness among tourists and passengers
Officials have expressed confidence that after recycling machines are available at places like Gateway of India, Ferry Wharf and Mumbai International Cruise Terminal, tourists will be encouraged to dispose of waste properly.
Protecting marine life and a clean Mumbai
This initiative will help reduce the amount of plastic waste entering the sea. It will contribute to protecting marine life, cleaning public places and improving the experience of tourists.
This is considered another important milestone in the eco-friendly initiatives of the Mumbai Port Authority. This step will be an important one towards making the city's beaches cleaner and pollution-free.
