Constructed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Mumbai’s most expensive public toilet, located at Marine Drive was built in 2018 for Rs 90 lakh. It has now become defunct, reported the Times of India.

Locals have voiced their discontent regarding the non-operational flushes, in addition to the walkers complaining about the foul smell coming from the public toilet. The BMC, on the other hand, mentioned that the vacuum mechanism utilized in the facility isn’t functioning adequately and thus, they are working on fixing it promptly.

Passersby's have commented on how they cannot walk near it due to the stench they have grumbled that in spite of incurring considerable expenses, the civic authority has failed to maintain it. Thus, they believe that an agency must be roped in to maintain the same.

Assistant Municipal Commissioner Chanda Jadhav of A ward responded to the issue saying that the facility’s sewage system will be checked and repaired at the ward level and it will be functioning again. They will liaison with the sewerage operations department if there is a need to connect with the main sewer line.

The report further stated that officials are of the opinion that the public toilet doesn’t have a sewage connection. With a septic tank under it, every alternate day it is cleaned with a suction tank. However, because it is used heavily, the tank’s capacity runs out causing a foul smell. Whilst there is a sewer connection across the road, the civic authority was looking to utilize trenchless technology that costs nearly Rs 40 lakh. This would have enabled the toilet to connect to the sewer line so the Marine Drive promenade wouldn’t have to be dug. This plan, however, never saw the light of the day.
