According to the statistics accessible on the Mumbai police’s websites, the authorities have registered 550 cases of rape through the island city until July this year. Out of these, the authorities were able to arrest 445 of the accused, stated a report by the Indian Express.

The recent, rape-murder of the 32-year-old woman in Mumbai’s Sakinaka has led to questions about the safety of women in the city. On Sunday, the National Commission for Women (NCW) along with the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) met with the victim’s family.

Data highlights that of the 550 cases, in 323 occurrences, those sexually assaulted were below the age of 18. The account further elaborated that 303 accused were brought behind bars for raping minors, 142, on the other hand, were nabbed for sexually assaulting majors. Police officials also stated that in 2020, 766 cases of rape were registered, wherein 658 accused were detained.

Out of these, minors were 445 and 321 were over 18 years. The police also claim that 419 and 239 were apprehended for sexually assaulting minor and major victims, respectively.

In 2019, 1,015 cases under Section 376 (rape) were logged, from which 931 cases were left detected. Similarly, in 2021, 2020 and 2019, 1,100, 1,943 and 2,678 cases were registered for incensing the modesty of a woman, respectively. Out of these, 860, 1,539 and 2,277 accused respectively were held.
