The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has finalised 19 locations across the city for the installation of new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, marking a significant step toward strengthening EV infrastructure and promoting eco-friendly transportation in Thane.

The decision was taken after a detailed survey conducted by the corporation’s Electric Department and City Development Department, under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao. Following the assessment, TMC has issued tenders to implement the project, which will be developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.

Under this model, the entire cost of construction, operation, maintenance, power supply, permissions, and security will be borne by private contractors selected through the tender process. As a result, the municipal corporation will not face any financial burden. In return, the contractor will share revenue with TMC, with the corporation earning at least INR 1 per unit of electricity consumed at these charging stations.

The land for the charging stations will be provided by the municipal corporation for a period of 10 years. Contractors will be required to keep the charging stations operational continuously, with a minimum mandatory operation period of three years. The electricity charges for users will be fixed according to guidelines issued by the Central Government’s Ministry of Energy, and commercial advertising will not be permitted at the charging sites.

Despite various incentives offered by the government to encourage electric vehicle usage, the lack of public charging facilities has been a major obstacle for EV adoption in the city. The introduction of these new charging stations is expected to provide much-needed support to EV owners, including users of electric cars and two-wheelers, and encourage more residents to switch to electric mobility.

The selected locations include key roads, junctions, bus stops, residential areas, and public spaces across Thane, ensuring wide geographic coverage and easy accessibility for commuters.
