Thane-Vadpe Eight-Lane Highway Project Nears Completion

Motorists travelling between Thane and Vadpe on the old Mumbai-Nashik Highway are expected to get relief from prolonged traffic congestion as the widening of the 23.8-km stretch from four lanes to eight lanes nears completion.

The project, being executed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), is aimed at improving traffic flow between Thane and the Samruddhi Mahamarg. The expanded corridor will also include service roads and several underpasses to improve local connectivity and reduce bottlenecks.

According to officials, around 75 per cent of the eight-lane work had been completed by December 2025, with the remaining work being accelerated. The project has faced several delays since construction began in 2021, with its completion deadline revised multiple times.

The Thane-Vadpe corridor is particularly important because of heavy traffic generated by industrial and warehousing activity in the Bhiwandi area, besides vehicles travelling towards Nashik and the Samruddhi Mahamarg.

The upgraded highway is expected to significantly reduce travel time and ease daily congestion once the entire project is completed. The Union government had earlier stated that the widening of the Thane-Vadpe section was targeted for completion in March 2026. 

With the completion of the remaining construction work, motorists are expected to see smoother traffic movement and better connectivity between Mumbai, Thane, Bhiwandi and the Samruddhi Mahamarg.
