In Thane city, the increasing number of stray dogs has created an atmosphere of fear among residents.
In the past two months, a total of 158 complaints have been registered on the newly launched Animal Helpline, most of which are related to dogs.
Incidents reported include dogs chasing pedestrians, following two-wheeler riders, and, in some cases, attacking in groups. Children and senior citizens are particularly affected, causing growing public concern and anger.
Although the municipal health and veterinary department is running a sterilization campaign for stray dogs, citizens have criticised it as insufficient due to the rapidly increasing dog population. The number of stray dogs in the city is estimated to be in the thousands, and rapid breeding is making the problem more severe.
To provide prompt responses to citizens’ complaints, the Animal Helpline was launched in February. Complaints range from dog attacks to sterilization, licensing, and other related issues. Officials have stated that efforts are underway to resolve these complaints.
Overall, the rising nuisance from stray dogs has created fear among Thane residents, and there is a strong demand for the municipal corporation to implement concrete and effective measures to ensure public safety.
