After an aluminum cladding from the Gandhi mural at Churchgate station fell on a 63-year-old man and killed him, Western Railways has decided to bring it down. The mural had fallen on the Mumbai man due to the high winds on account of cyclone Vayu.
The Mahatma Gandhi mural was constructed at a cost of ₹25 lakh and will be brought down owing to the beginning of monsoon in the city. Therefore, in order to avoid incidents like the past accident, Western Railways has decided to remove the mural.

The decision comes after a structural audit of all the four sides of the railway building was ordered. Senior officials had stated that swirling winds at high speed led to five panels from the east-facing part of the mural to break loose and fall.
Churchgate station had received a makeover in 2011 and the Mahatma Gandhi mural was added as a part of the beautification project. The project was created by Brazilian artist Eduardo Kobra and his team of 52 associates in just 18 days.
