The Government Railway Police (GRP) have recovered the knife allegedly used in the murder of 22-year-old Mayank Lohar in a Mumbai local train, nearly a week after the incident.

The murder took place on the night of June 23 when Lohar, a resident of Virar, was travelling on a Churchgate–Nallasopara fast local train. An argument reportedly broke out between Lohar and fellow passenger Roshan Suvarna over whether the train door should be kept open or closed during heavy rain. The dispute turned violent, and Suvarna allegedly stabbed Lohar in the abdomen between Goregaon and Borivali stations. Lohar later died from his injuries, while the accused got off at Borivali station and fled.

According to the GRP, Suvarna threw the knife outside Borivali railway station after the attack. The weapon was later found by an employee of a nearby hotel, who kept it aside without realising it was connected to the crime.

Police said the knife was handed over to them on June 29 after television reports and a viral video of the incident prompted the hotel employee to suspect it was the murder weapon. The GRP has confirmed that the recovered knife is the one allegedly used in the attack.

Suvarna is currently in police custody until July 6. Investigators are examining why he had been carrying the knife and whether it had been used in any previous offences. The investigation is ongoing.
