A routine ride on Mumbai’s lifeline turned deadly this week when a disagreement inside a crowded local train escalated into a fatal stabbing.
Mayank Lohar, 22, was travelling in a first-class compartment on a Churchgate–Nallasopara fast local when an argument reportedly broke out over whether the coach door should remain open during heavy rain. According to police, Lohar asked a fellow passenger to close the door as the train moved between Andheri and Borivali stations. What began as a dispute over commuter etiquette soon turned violent.
Investigators say Lohar was attacked inside the moving train and later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital. The accused allegedly fled by jumping off the train near Borivali station before disappearing from the area. A murder case has been registered, and railway police have launched a search operation.
The incident has once again raised concerns about passenger safety on Mumbai’s suburban railway network, where overcrowding, long commutes, and everyday disputes can sometimes spiral into violence. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage and gathering witness statements as the investigation continues.
