Previously, traffic officials would take action against motorists sporting illegal number plates only when they were spotted.
Officials have now announced that they will now monitor CCTV footage and take legal action against those sporting "fake" number plates. Violators will be booked under the Motor Vehicles Act. Authorities said vehicles that use personal monikers on number plates to customize or stylize their vehicles will also be under the scanner.

The Motor Transport Act makes the rules regarding vehicle number plates very clear, though motorists have long resorted to using customized plates with the excuse of making them look attractive. In many cases, these plates don’t clearly display the vehicle registration number which is considered an offence.
Traffic police officials said that they took action against 1,407 violating vehicles between January 1 and November 30 this year. However, a total of 3,216 number plate violators were booked in 2019.
