The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) on Monday inaugurated the south-bound flyover at the junction of Andheri-Ghatkopar link road. With this flyover opening up, many commuters who travel via Eastern Express Highway (EEH), may not have to face traffic snarls and their commute time may come down.

The 693-metre south-bound arm is an extension of the Andheri-Ghatkopar link road (AGLR). It starts from Ghatkopar and stretches to up to Vikhroli. MMRDA undertook the ₹33.04-crore project to decongest the patch. A north-bound arm moving towards Thane had already been constructed. People had complained about congestion on this route for a while now.

Andheri-Ghatkopar link road has a one-way flyover of three-lanes for passengers travelling from Mumbai to Thane via Eastern Expressway. However, due to the lack of this facility for the passengers going to Mumbai, there was a permanent traffic jam near this flyover. For this, the work of three-lane flyover towards Mumbai was started in May 2018. After two and a half years, the stalled work was completed and the flyover has finally open for public.

The new flyover will reduce traffic congestion at the junction. The number of vehicles on the road has increased tremendously in the last four months as the general public is not been given the go-ahead to travel via suburban railways. The journey from Mulund to Vikhroli on the Eastern Expressway is extremely fast. However, due to flyover work at Andheri-Ghatkopar junction, only one lane on the main road could be used till now.

During the last four months, people travelling via this route constantly complained of traffic jams. The flyover at Ghatkopar is expected to reduce traffic congestion to some extent. Since the construction work of Mumbai Metro is being carried on the route from to Mumbai from Uddapula, Ramabai Nagar will continue to be a bottleneck.

The MMRDA says that the commuters can experience smooth and safe driving in both directions and it will give better connectivity to Mumbai from Thane. The flyover was inaugurated by Cabinet Minister Aditya Thackeray, Minister Eknath Shinde and MMRDA representatives.

MMRDA has also undertaken works on improving the Chheda Nagar junction on the Eastern Express Highway.
