The Government Railway Police (GRP) have arrested women and minor girls involved in mobile phone thefts in Mumbai’s railway network, exposing an organised pattern of crimes targeting commuters.

According to police officials, the accused were part of gangs that operated in crowded local trains and railway stations, particularly during peak hours. They would identify distracted passengers, especially those using mobile phones near doors or platforms, and quickly snatch devices before fleeing into the crowd.

Investigations revealed that several of the accused are repeat offenders, while some minors were allegedly being used by older members of the gang to avoid strict legal action. The stolen mobile phones were often sold through local intermediaries or reprogrammed for resale.

The GRP has intensified surveillance across railway stations and trains, using CCTV footage and passenger complaints to track suspects. Officials said that multiple arrests have already been made and further investigations are underway to identify the wider network behind the thefts.

Police have also urged commuters to remain alert and avoid using mobile phones near train doors or crowded areas, warning that such gangs continue to exploit busy suburban routes.
