The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) schools have nine per cent i.e. 781 vacant posts, according to the RTI findings. Despite vacant posts, it is being said that every civic school has surplus teachers. The RTI findings also exposed the violation of Right to Education Act (RTE) which states that it is mandatory that every school should have equal number of teachers and students.
8900 teacher posts are still vacant
Civic schools have 8900 vacant teacher posts as per the RTI filed by the education activist Shyam Sonar. He had asked for the statistics until September 2017. Currently, 8,119 teachers are working in civic schools. It means, that there are nearly 781 vacant posts.

Sonar said that there are many civic schools who do not focus on imparting good quality education but teach students of class 2 and 3 together, hence violating the RTE Act.
