Chembur: Women students denied entry in college for wearing burqa

Last year's pattern of entering educational institutes wearing burqa has been repeated in Mumbai. N. G. Acharya and D. K. Students who came to Maratha college wearing burqa were denied admission in the college. So the students protested in front of the college in the afternoon. Meanwhile, the college administration says that the college has implemented the uniform from this year and the students were given preconceptions about it. The college has postponed the decision till August 8 following the students' protest.

Many Muslim students from Govandi-Shivaji Nagar area study in N. G. Acharya in Chembur and D. K. Maratha college. Some of the junior college students came wearing burqas on Wednesday afternoon. However, in this college, the students wearing burqa were stopped near the entrance of the college. Therefore, the Muslim students of the college and student organisations started a protest in front of the college. The students said that the college should allow entry to the premises even when wearing a burqa and provide a place to change clothes there.

Late on Wednesday evening, the college decided to allow the students to enter the college premises after the protest by the students. The girl students will be admitted to the college premises. However, female students are required to change their burqa in the washroom and attend classes or other college activities. The college has made it clear that it is not allowed to wear a burqa in the college premises. We are suspending the uniform enforcement rule till August 8. Until then, the students will be communicated with and their views will be understood and the uniform will be implemented again from August 9, said the principal of the college, Vidyagouri Lele.
