The southwest monsoon is expected to reach Kerala on May 26, according to weather experts, bringing hope of relief from the intense summer heat across India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that conditions are becoming increasingly favourable for the monsoon’s advancement over the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, Andaman Sea and nearby regions.
Pre-monsoon showers have already been reported in several parts of Maharashtra, offering temporary respite from rising temperatures. However, weather officials say the impact of thunderstorm activity may gradually reduce over the next few days. While regions outside Vidarbha are experiencing scattered rain, residents in Vidarbha continue to face severe heat conditions.
The IMD had earlier predicted that the monsoon could arrive in Kerala around May 26, although there may be a variation of four days before or after the expected date. Private weather agencies have also noted that current atmospheric conditions over the Arabian Sea could influence the speed of monsoon winds in the coming days.
Typically, the monsoon reaches Kerala around June 1 before progressing towards Maharashtra’s coastline within 10 to 12 days. This year, weather experts expect the monsoon to reach South Konkan around June 5 if conditions remain favourable.
According to forecasts, most parts of Maharashtra are likely to witness dry weather until May 27. However, light to moderate thunderstorms and rainfall are expected in parts of Konkan and central Maharashtra. The rainfall is also expected to bring down temperatures slightly, offering some relief from the prevailing heat and humidity.
