Despite imposing strict restrictions and a night curfew in place, Maharashtra on Tuesday, April 6, reported 55,469 COVID-19 cases, which is the second-highest spike since the outbreak of the pandemic.

This persistent rise in cases has left the government worried about the situation due to which State Health Minister Rajesh Tope spoke with the Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan and requested him to let neighbouring states send oxygen cylinders to Maharashtra, where more and more hospitals have reported shortage of oxygen cylinders that are crucial for the care of critical patients.

The total number of cases in the state now stands at 31,13,354. Additionally, the state has reported 34,256 recoveries, and 297 deaths in the last 24 hours. As of April 6, there are 4,72,283 active cases in the state, and the death toll stands at 56,330.

While the case fatality rate stands at 1.81 per cent, the recovery rate is 82.98 per cent. With 2,01,693 new tests, the number of samples tested so far in Maharashtra has gone up to 2,09,17,486.

Out of the total cases in the state, Mumbai itself recorded 10,030 new COVID-19 cases on April 6, the second-highest daily count so far. Besides, 31 deaths were reported on the same day.

Hence, taking it to Twitter, State Minister Aaditya Thackeray held a meeting with officials of the civic body and other agencies "as we see an exponential rise in Covid tests, cases and hospitalisation. The second wave is much stronger than 1st."

"While our test, tracing, fumigation is on autopilot mode thanks to our frontline workers and doctors, we are looking to increase the bed capacity once again to nearly 23,000 beds with enough oxygenated beds, likewise have an exponential increase in ICU beds," Thackeray wrote in his tweet.

Meanwhile, Pune currently has 84,309 active cases followed by Mumbai which has 79,368 active cases. Thane and Nagpur also have contributed to the state's active cases tally with worrying figures of 61,127 and 57,372 respectively.
