Over the past three years, 521 patients have died in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at St. George Hospital, according to information presented in the Maharashtra Legislative Council by state medical education minister Hasan Mushrif. The data shows that 2,152 patients were admitted to the ICU between July 2022 and July 2025, with a mortality rate of around 24%.

The issue was raised by BJP MLC Uma Khapre, who expressed concern about the availability of doctors and the deployment of Ayurvedic and Homeopathic trainee students in the ICU. In response, Mushrif clarified that qualified doctors are regularly present and trainees are assigned only for training purposes, while all treatment decisions are made by licensed doctors.

The report also noted that about 7.8% of patients left the hospital before completing treatment. Authorities say many ICU patients arrive in extremely critical condition, often after delayed treatment elsewhere, which contributes to the higher death rate, and the government has formed committees and introduced regular death audits to improve ICU care.
