The Maharashtra government has clarified that the Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya Shatabdi Hospital in Govandi, Mumbai will not be privatised. State minister Uday Samant assured that the hospital will continue to provide affordable treatment to the public.
Addressing concerns raised in the state legislature, Samant said that the hospital is set to undergo a major redevelopment. A new modern facility with around 580 beds will be constructed at the site to improve healthcare services in the area.
He also explained that 264 beds will remain reserved for patients under the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), ensuring that people continue to receive medical treatment at civic hospital rates.
The clarification came after questions were raised by Sachin Ahir, who expressed concern that the redevelopment project might lead to privatisation. In response, Samant stated that the project will follow a public–private partnership model, but control of the hospital will not be handed over to private entities.
The redevelopment plan also includes establishing a medical college at the same location, which is expected to improve both healthcare services and medical education in the city. The current hospital, which has been operating for more than four decades, will be significantly expanded and modernized under the project.
