A woman passenger fell from a crowded Mumbai local train between Diva and Mumbra on Thursday morning, but escaped a major accident after landing in a drain beside the railway tracks.
The incident occurred when a Dombivli-CSMT local, scheduled to depart at 7.56 am, was halted at a signal between Diva and Mumbra. The woman was reportedly standing near the door of the ladies’ compartment when she lost her balance amid the heavy rush and fell from the train.
She fell into a drain along the tracks and became stuck there. Since the train was stationary at the time, a potentially fatal accident was avoided. The woman is reported to have suffered minor injuries.
The incident has once again highlighted the serious safety risks posed by overcrowding on Mumbai’s suburban trains, particularly during the morning peak hours.
Passengers travelling from Dombivli, Diva, Mumbra and Kalwa towards Mumbai face severe crowding during the morning rush. With trains packed beyond capacity, passengers are often forced to stand close to the doors, increasing the risk of losing balance and falling onto the tracks.
The incident between Diva and Mumbra has once again raised concerns over passenger safety and the need for effective measures to tackle overcrowding on Mumbai’s local train network.
