The National Disaster Management Authority informed the Supreme Court that the compensation for deaths caused by coronavirus has been determined. According to reports, the family will get compensation of Rs 50,000 for each death and the money will come from the state disaster management funds.

On June 30, the apex court had ordered compensation for every death caused to covid-19 in India. The court had asked the National Disaster Management Authority to inform the states after fixing the compensation amount within six weeks.

A petition was filed in the Supreme Court seeking compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the families of those who died due to the coronavirus. As per the rules, the families of those who did due to natural calamities get compensation of Rs 4 lakh, mentioned accounts. However, due to a large number of deaths due to covid-19, the central government had refused to pay the said compensation.

The Centre had said that such a large compensation would be a huge loss to the government. But after pressure from the Supreme Court, the NDRF on Wednesday said that families of those killed by the covid-19 would be compensated Rs 50,000. For this, the families of the deceased would have to apply to the disaster management office.

The apex court had said that it was the duty of the government to compensate the people in such calamities. But had left it to the government to decide the amount of compensation. For this, the family has to apply to the district disaster management office. Along with this application, proof of death due to coronavirus, i.e., a medical certificate has to be given. It was also said that the process of compensation for deaths caused by coronavirus during the pandemic would continue.
