Maharashtra has blood stocks that will only last for up to 10 days stated the State Blood Transfusion Council. They have thus, requested collectors as well commissioners to assist in arranging camps and muster donors to revive the stocks, stated a report by the Times of India.

An official from the State Blood Transfusion Council, mentioned, based on the report that they had nearly 40,000 blood units in the 350 blood banks across Maharashtra which will suffice for 8-10 days as opposed to the usual safeguard of 15-20 days.

According to the Council, there are a variety of reasons for this incidence some of which include a reduction in the number of blood donation camps, a lesser crowd of donors because of the coronavirus pandemic, and the inability of organizations to arrange camps in light of the covid-19 restrictions. The council has thus requested the commissioners and collectors to assist the public health department is setting up camps for blood donation while adhering to the induced protocols.

Dr Arun Thorat, the assistant director of the State Blood Transfusion Council elaborated on how a larger number of blood donation camps with the local bodies will help revive the diminishing blood bank stock in Maharashtra. He added that these camps need to be conducted, not just once, but more often.

Additionally, a huge response was attained from the blood donation camps organized earlier, but recently the response has been low, with the collection numbers dwindling from 100 units to 50 units, stated a blood bank official, based on the account. Apart from this, another coordinator of the drives elucidated that social media was the foremost platform to reach out to the public and that many were in two minds about donating blood since the advent of the pandemic.

The council has sought assistance from NGOs and social organizations to assist and ameliorate blood donation camps. Another official cited the low incidence of donations to the non-operation of professional and education establishments. Rajesh Deshmukh, the Pune District Collector has proclaimed a blood donation drive on Wednesday in Khed, highlighted the narrative.

An official from the Council also said that the replacement donor theory used by medical institutions shouldn’t be used and health buses should plan the drives. Apart from this, some medical establishments have been organizing camps to revive the stock.

Chairperson of the Hospital Board of India’s Pune Chapter, Dr Sanjay Patil elaborated that the Indian Medical Association has sought help from many Ganpati pandals to organize camps, but the response has been low owing to the pandemic, they are, therefore, looking to organize more drives. He also added that with dengue patients needing blood platelets and elective surgeries recommencing, blood units will be demanded.
