The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has decided to establish a dedicated company to accelerate the redevelopment of old, dilapidated and unauthorised buildings under the city's cluster development scheme.
The decision is aimed at giving fresh momentum to the long-pending cluster redevelopment programme and streamlining the implementation of projects across Thane.
The proposed company will coordinate various aspects of redevelopment and work with residents, landowners, developers and government agencies involved in the projects. The move is expected to reduce administrative delays and help speed up the redevelopment process. Thane's cluster redevelopment scheme seeks to replace old and unsafe buildings with planned residential and commercial complexes while improving roads, infrastructure and civic amenities in densely populated areas.
Several areas of Thane have been identified for redevelopment under the cluster model. However, the implementation of projects has faced delays due to issues related to land ownership, resident consent, approvals and coordination between different agencies.
The formation of a dedicated company is expected to provide a separate institutional framework for handling these projects and improve coordination among the stakeholders. The cluster redevelopment programme is also considered important from a safety perspective, as a large number of residents continue to live in ageing and structurally vulnerable buildings.
Under the redevelopment model, residents are expected to receive new and safer homes along with improved infrastructure and civic facilities. The TMC will now work on the structure, responsibilities and functioning of the proposed company before taking the next steps towards its establishment. The move is expected to help accelerate redevelopment and provide relief to residents who have been waiting for years for their old buildings and neighbourhoods to be redeveloped.
