Residents of Panvel, Kharghar, Taloja and Kamothe continue to face a severe water shortage despite the ongoing monsoon, leading to growing anger among citizens and renewed demands for immediate action.
The water crisis has affected several areas under the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC), with residents complaining about irregular and inadequate water supply. Many households have been forced to depend on private water tankers to meet their daily requirements.
The situation has raised concerns over the growing gap between water demand and supply in the rapidly developing Panvel region. Kharghar, Taloja, Kamothe and Kalamboli have witnessed significant population growth in recent years, putting additional pressure on existing water infrastructure.
Dispute over Morbe Dam water
Morbe Dam is a key source of drinking water for Navi Mumbai and is also linked to the wider water supply network serving the region. The allocation of water from the dam has become a major point of contention between Panvel and Navi Mumbai authorities.
Local representatives have been demanding an additional 20 to 30 million litres per day (MLD) of water for Panvel and the surrounding areas. They have argued that additional supply could provide immediate relief to residents facing shortages.
The issue has also reached the Bombay High Court, with Panvel representatives seeking directions for the release of additional water from the Morbe Dam system.
Residents depend on tankers
The shortage has particularly affected residents of Kharghar, Kamothe, Taloja and Kalamboli. With regular supply remaining inadequate, residents have increasingly turned to water tankers, adding to household expenses and causing considerable inconvenience.Earlier, the civic administration had also arranged emergency tanker supplies in some areas to tackle the shortage.Residents have questioned why water shortages continue even during the monsoon and have demanded that authorities resolve the issue instead of relying on temporary tanker arrangements.
Growing demand for permanent solution
The water crisis has highlighted the need for long-term planning as Panvel and its surrounding areas continue to undergo rapid urbanisation.
Citizens and local representatives have called for better coordination between the Panvel Municipal Corporation, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation and CIDCO to ensure adequate water allocation and improve the region's water infrastructure.With thousands of residents dependent on a regular water supply, citizens have urged the authorities to take immediate steps to address the shortage and ensure a reliable water supply throughout the year.
