With the outbreak of the coronavirus and the surge in the number of cases in Mumbai, many places have opened care centres to treat the patients suffering from COVID-19. The National Sports Club of India (NSCI) complex in Worli has now been transformed into a hospital.
In these hospitals, the patients suffering from the coronavirus are being tested and treated. More than 1,000 patients, including coronary heart disease patients, prison inmates and police, have been treated. Furthermore, a 10-bed intensive care unit is touted to be set up within a week. Therefore, critically ill patients can now be treated in the NSCI without being transferred to other hospitals.
The NSCI complex in Worli had started with 600 beds to treat cases of COVID-19. The intensive care unit of 40 beds is now being initiated. Of these, work on ten beds has been completed. The camera’s in the ICU are also being installed. Through this, it will be possible to keep records on the device with the patients. Expert doctors are said to guide junior doctors in treating patients from the main big screen. This is to ensure that less contact is maintained with the actual patients in order to contain the spread of the infection. Therefore, it will be possible to work with less manpower. Thus manpower of about 30 persons is required to start ten beds at the moment.
Earlier in May, the principal secretary at the State Health Department had said that about 10 per cent of COVID-19 patients require critical care in Mumbai. However, the municipal and state-run hospitals account only for 644 ICU beds whereas the number of patients requiring critical care is nearly four times over. Maharashtra currently has 1,20,363 cases of the coronavirus with cases 62,875 in Mumbai only. Therefore, the addition of beds would prove to be beneficial for people suffering from the disease.
