Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday inaugurated Wipro’s intermediary care facility at Hinjewadi in Pune district with 450 beds for a COVID-19 treatment facility in Pune. Wipro has reassigned its IT campus into a COVID-19 hospital on a public-private partnership (PPP) basis.

While virtually interacting at the inauguration event, Thackeray said that the Maharashtra government has managed to set up a sufficient number of health care facilities in a short duration for the treatment of COVID-19 patients.

Thackeray praised Wipro and said that it has shown readiness to come up with its own state-of-the-art facility. The hospital building is a symbol of how fast and quality Wipro works in social work as well, he said.

The hospital has been build by Wipro in an area of 1.8 lakh square feet and it has an intensive care unit along with 18 ventilators and two ambulances. The hospital will admit moderate cases of COVID-19.

“The health care infrastructure was not sufficient at the initial stage of the coronavirus outbreak. However, the state government has been able to develop enough number of facilities,” CM Thackeray said.

The country’s first field hospital was set up at Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai in just 15 days with a capacity 1,000 beds, Thackeray while adding that Jumbo centre at NESCO in Goregaon was also started.

The Chief Minister also announced that a COVID-19 centre at CIDCO Exhibition centre in Navi Mumbai will also be started.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope said that the state government will also make efforts to raise similar facilities in rural areas.

Maharashtra has been the worst-hit state due to the coronavirus outbreak. Since its first case on March 9, the number of COVID-19 cases in the state has reached 97,648 nearing the one lakh-mark. The death toll in Maharashtra has touched 3,590.

In Mumbai alone, the number of COVID-19 cases have risen to 54,085 and has reported 1,954 deaths. On Thursday, the financial capital reported 97 deaths.
