BMC Introduces QR Code Birth Certificates, Correction Services at All Ward Offices Across Mumbai

To reduce delays in birth and death registrations and certificate corrections, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched dedicated counters at the Civic Facility Centres (CFCs) across all ward offices in Mumbai.

The initiative aims to simplify services related to birth and death registration, certificate corrections, name inclusion, and other related procedures, making the process faster and more convenient for citizens.

Services Available at BMC Civic Facility Centres

Citizens can now access the following services at the dedicated CFC counters:

• Inclusion of a newborn's name in a birth certificate
• Correction of errors in birth and death certificates registered through the new Civil Registration System (CRS) portal
• Conversion of old birth and death certificates into the new QR code-enabled format
• Corrections to marriage certificates
• Online tracking of application status

With these dedicated counters, applicants no longer need to make repeated visits to medical officers to check the status of their requests.

Online Application Tracking and SMS Updates

The new computerized system enables citizens to track the status of their applications online, helping ensure that corrections and updates to birth and death certificates are processed more efficiently.

In addition, Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide has directed officials to introduce an SMS notification service in the next phase. Once implemented, applicants will receive updates on their application status directly on their mobile phones.

Dedicated Counter for Students and Overseas Applicants

The BMC has also established a separate counter for citizens travelling abroad for higher education, employment, or other purposes.

The facility allows applicants to convert older birth and death certificates into the new QR code-enabled format, which is often required for university admissions, visa applications, and international travel documentation.

The move comes in response to a sharp increase in requests for birth certificate corrections and updated certificates for academic admissions, overseas employment, and immigration-related purposes.

What About Birth and Death Records Registered Before 2016?

The BMC has clarified that citizens whose birth or death records were registered before 2016 can apply for certificates in the new format through the Central Government's Civil Registration System (CRS) portal.

However, since these older records require additional verification, processing may take longer than usual. The civic body has stated that efforts are underway to streamline the verification process and reduce the time required to issue updated certificates.
