Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar took a dig at Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari while questioning his stand to conduct university exams for final year students.

The Maharashtra government recently announced its decision to not conduct final year exams for universities in Maharashtra amid the coronavirus crisis. However, Governor Koshyari has been adamant that the exams should be held and has expressed his displeasure with the decision saying that the state government has acted arbitrarily in this regard.

During his visit to Ratnagiri district, Pawar on Wednesday said that the exams have been cancelled in universities across the globe including Oxford and Cambridge University in the wake of coronavirus pandemic.

Pawar was on a two-visit to the Konkan region which has been adversely affected due to Cyclone Nisarga. The NCP chief visited Raigad and Ratnagiri districts to take stock of the damage caused and interacted with the locals along with the local representatives and officials.

While speaking to the reporters in a presser, the NCP chief informed that even IIT-Delhi had decided to cancel exams. Maharashtra Higher Education Minister Uday Samant had also written to University Grant’s Commission taking the decision to cancel exams, he said.

“As reputed universities in India, as well as private universities, are deciding to cancel the exams, the same decision taken by the state government to cancel the exams is not entirely wrong. If the governor's opinion is against this decision, then maybe he has more knowledge than Oxford,” Pawar said.

Governor Koshyari, chancellor of universities, wrote to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray objecting to the government’s decision to not hold varsity exams. He said that this would jeopardise the future of lakhs of students.
