The social media and WhatsApp forwards stating that a complete lockdown from June 15 will be imposed in Mumbai and other areas in Maharashtra has created panic among people.

However, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Friday rebuked the rumours and said that the lockdown has not been reimposed in the state. He appealed the people to not believe such messages.

Earlier, the Maharashtra government announced “Mission Begin Again” on the lines of centre’s ‘Unlock 1.0’. The ‘Mission Begin Again’ order issued by the state government roadmaps the unlocking in phases in Maharashtra.

The outdoor activities have been permitted in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMRD) from 5:00 AM to 7:00 PM while shops have also been allowed to open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM on condition of maintaining safety guidelines and practising social distancing.

The Chief Minister has also asked people to remain cautious and follow the guidelines issued by the government to stop the spread of the coronavirus. Since the number of coronavirus cases in Maharashtra has reached 97,648, the rumours of a full lockdown started doing rounds of social media platforms.

“The lockdown has not been reimposed. CM Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray has appealed to the people to refrain from crowding. He has earnestly requested them to follow the Govt's instructions and take necessary precautions to stay safe and take care (sic),” the official account of CMO Maharashtra tweeted in clarification.

Thackeray on Wednesday hinted that the lockdown in the state may get extended if people don’t follow the guidelines issued by the centre and state government to stop the spread of COVID-19.

The lockdown restrictions have been eased to a major extent to start the economic activities. However, the government would be compelled to withdraw relaxations if people don’t honour the current level of restrictions, he said.
