Maharashtra reports highest spike of 178 deaths due to COVID-19

The state of Maharashtra which has become the hotbed for the coronavirus reported its highest rise in COVID-19 related deaths on Monday. So far, the virus has claimed 178 more lives taking the toll to 4,128. As many as 2,786 new cases were reported taking the tally to 1,10,477.

According to the State Health Department, the number of active cases has come to 50,554. So far, 5,071 patients have been discharged. The number of recoveries till date is 56,049. State Surveillance Officer Doctor Pradeep Awate had stated that the recovery rate has increased from an average of 47 per cent in the last few days to 50.61 per cent. The case fatality rate, too, has increased to 3.70 per cent.

Meanwhile, Mumbai has reported 1,067 new cases and 68 deaths. In the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), 20 deaths were reported from Vasai-Virar, 13 from Mira-Bhayandar, 12 each from Thane and Navi Mumbai and seven from Kalyan-Dombivali. On the other hand, Pune reported 14 deaths, 13 were reported from Dhule, and more from Solapur, Nashik and Jalna. The district tally of Pune has reached 12,419 with the district reporting more than 200 cases. Of these, 4,646 were active cases while 7,279 had been discharged thus far.

The Birhanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on the other hand has increased its containment zones to 810, while over 4,627 buildings and chawls have been sealed and are being self-managed by the society. While Dharavi has known to be been the area most affected with the COVID-19, as per recent BMC reports, Borivali is the currently the most affected area with the doubling rate at 12 days.

At the moment, Mumbai's doubling rate stands at 25 days which is higher than the national average of 17.4 days. A couple of days back, the civic body had released a ward wise control room number for information on the coronavirus and the availability of beds. It also announced that a dashboard giving information about the status of crematoriums will be ready by the month-end.
