The Maharashtra government on Thursday allowed inter-district movement of people within the area of Municipal Corporation under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The government is to still regulate inter-state and inter-district movement.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), which includes Mumbai city, Mumbai suburban, Thane, Palghar and part of Raigad district, is the worst affected by the novel coronavirus in the state. According to the revised guidelines issued on Thursday, the state government said inter-district movement of people in MMR shall be authorized. Furthermore, the government stated that the inter-district movement elsewhere in the state, as well as inter-state movement, will continue to be regulated.

The travelling of stranded labourers, migrant workers, pilgrims, tourists will continue to be regulated as per the standard operating procedures. The state government also allowed some outdoor physical activities as part of the first phase of “Mission Begins Again”. However, the revised order on Thursday said no garden, open-air gym, and play area equipment will be allowed to function at the moment.

On the other hand, in phase two, all shops on one side of the road, lane or passage will open for full working hours on one day while all shops on the other side of the road will remain open the next day and so on, as per the order. All the shops in Mumbai, including the ones in the red zone will open based on an odd-even basis. However, malls shall remain shut. According to the notice, all employers should take adequate precautions before opening their shops. All the social-distancing protocols must be followed including wearing of the masks which are mandatory. In phase three, private offices have been allowed to operate with up to 10 per cent staff or 10 people with remaining employees working from home.

Maharashtra at the moment has cases 74,861 of coronavirus, with Mumbai having 43,492 cases.
