Pollution is currently becoming a major problem for the entire world. Efforts are being made at different levels to prevent pollution and the effects of increasing pollution on human health are also coming to light. To avoid this side effect we take care of our skin or face but we forget to take care of our hair. Air pollution in cities damages our hair and negatively affects our scalp.
“Air pollutants such as sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter can accumulate on the scalp and hair causing problems such as dryness, itchiness and dandruff. These can clog hair follicles leading to thinning and hair loss,” says Dr Sravya C Tipparneni, dermatologist and trichologist.
"Oxidative stress caused by chemicals in the air can cause dull hair and grey hair," dermatologist Dr Shibani Bhatia told Hindustan Times.
You can use the remedies recommended by experts to combat the effects of air pollution on your hair.
1. Cleanse your scalp
Air pollutants can make your scalp and hair oily. It can also cause dandruff problems. Choose a good shampoo that is salicylic acid and sulphate free. Wash your hair regularly and clean the scalp by removing sweat, oil and dust. You can clean your scalp with shampoo once a week.
2. Apply conditioner to hair
Hair loses its natural moisture due to heat and pollution so apply conditioner to your hair and leave it for 10 to 15 minutes. Do this at least once a week to keep your hair healthy.
3. Cover the hair
Cover your hair with a scarf or cap if you are travelling, especially by bike. Constant exposure to dust and wind can make your hair dry.

4. Collagen
Hair is made up of keratin and amino acids. Adding a collagen supplement to your routine can be beneficial as air pollution can cause free radical damage to your hair.
5. Antioxidants
Neutralise the oxidative stress caused to your hair by pollution by including products containing antioxidants like vitamin C and E in your diet.
6. Cleansing mask or scrub
A good exfoliating scrub or hair mask once in 10-15 days will remove the pollutants that block the pores of your scalp. Do not use it daily as it can dry out your hair.
